EPIC URGES FCC TO OPEN INVESTIGATION INTO DISCLOSURE
OF CALL RECORD INFORMATION TO THE NSA

Privacy Group Says Americans' Phone Privacy At Risk

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) today
urged Kevin Martin, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission,
to open an investigation into the various reports that customer
information was improperly disclosed to the National Security Agency.

EPIC said that the accounts provided by the telephone companies
regarding their involvement in the NSA program hardly resolved the
matter. EPIC pointed to ambiguous comments made by Verizon and the
suggestion from BellSouth that some of the phone companies may have
sold customer record information to the NSA.

The EPIC letter stated, "If telecommunication carriers disclosed
customer information to the NSA in the manner described in press
reports, then violations of section 222 of the Communications Act have
occurred."

A conference call will be held on Wednesday, May 17 at 1 pm ET to
discuss the EPIC call for an FCC investigation.

EPIC is a public interest research center in Washington, D.C. It was
established in 1994 to focus public attention on emerging civil
liberties issues and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and
constitutional values. EPIC has participated in many communications
privacy matters before the FCC and in Congress.
