Julia looked up at him "Maybe, or your involvement would have made something
worse. At least this way Nick was able to liberate himself and you know,
with his personality and the way he is, a part of him would have felt week
to have someone else handle the problem. You can't dwell on it Derek.
What's done is done and I'm sorry to break this to you honey..... but you
can't have absolute control over everything and not everything that happens
is your fault. You're responsible for our well being, yes, and you do your
job very well.

"But," she gave him one of those looks "you can't keep beating yourself up
over things you didn't have control over. You did the best you could and
that's all any of us can do."

She wasn't sure if they were still talking about Nick's father, Ireland or
what had happened to Amber in Boston and she looked down at their joined
hands before gently directing him to the still-heated food and the chair
next to it before moving over to the dresser and pulling out the pajama top
and looking over at him as she started to change out of the black number "We
deal with things as they come along."

Derek did sit down, but did not start eating. He looked back at Julia,
listening to her. "I do not feel responsible for everything," he informed
her. "For instance, I am quite certain that the fog is not my doing." He
smiled at her slightly. "Are you cold?"
