Derek opened his mouth to answer and then stopped.  "Helpless, I suppose,"
he said finally.  "Frightened."  He looked back at the water for a moment
before meeting her gaze again.  He understood what she was getting at and he
was starting feel badly about the entire mess.  "That's how I felt in that
cave," he added.  "Watching you and not able to do anything."
