No, what you are simply doing is logging into the SMTP server with your 
password and username as authorization -- just like we do now with all 
of our POP3 accounts, whereby we log in with username and password.

MailandNews does not have a "Pop First" requirement.  You can send your 
mail through the mailandnews.com smtp server before downloading your 
mail from it's pop3 server, just as long as you authenticate yourself 
as I noted in the above paragraph.

Which server are you failing to connect?  The POP3 server to download 
your mail or the SMTP server to send your mail?

MailandNews works best as a POP3 and SMTP account used in a quality 
email client.
