I too had "issues" with softhome.net, but pop-first authentication is
now becoming quite common. Many of our free remote pop3 services now
require that.

The pop3 protocols can be sent to a server without actually downloading
your mail. The Pegasus mail client that I use is the only client I've
seen that allows you to configure an smtp setting for "pop-first."
With Pegasus you don't actually have to download email to send email
first, but rather you just send mail and in the process Pegasus first
sends out a POP3 signal and when the receiving server acknowledges,
then Pegasus can send the mail. It all happens very fast and you did
not have to actually download email.

If other email client vendors would put this feature in their email
programs, I don't think the pop-first authentication would be an
annoyance for anyone.

Does anyone else on this list use another email client that has a
configuration feature where an SMTP setting can be set to "pop first?"
