Helloooooo list......
Vanessa wrote about Coupland's Miss Wyoming:
"I wouldn't say it's wrong getting it."
OK... well here we go. I'm nine chapters in and loving
it so far! And your point about Douglas becoming
irritating in the second half of his books is a fair
one - I'm a fan, and I love the way he writes - so it
doesn't get to me. A friend I lent "Girlfriend in a
Coma" to suggested Coupland was like Morrissey (???)
She said that with Moz, he has all this irony, little
in-jokes and stuff that fans really dig, but for many,
they get turned off because he just sounds dull and
depressing (her opinion - not mine). And in the case
of Coupland, he has this occasionally glib turn of
phrase that could turn people off too. My friend may
have a point? Anyone agree?
Also - on smoking - being a smoker myself, imagine my
surprise when I went back to the city I grew up in,
Canberra (capital of Australia), and found that
smoking had been outlawed in the majority of bars and
clubs, unless they provided "adequate air filtration"
(Government's words - not mine). Which most don't - as
it's too expensive. God, scotch without Marlboro
Lights? It was absolute tedium. Not much chance of a
Film-Noir-like-flirtation-in-the-lighting-of-a-cigarette
exchange with people either. Robert Mitchum would not
be amused. Punk.
Unrelated but profound mess at the end of the mail
follows -
Nick Drake's "Way to Blue" is one of the most
beautiful songs ever written.
Travis'"Why does it always rain on me?" never fails to
make me smile - the most wonderful feeling of
melancholy. Wow.
OK.... enough from the Antipodes....
Popilicious salutations....
Paul
