Yes, let's talk about Coupland. Has anyone checked out his amazing
webpage for one? I know he didn't design it himself, but it is still
quite beautiful.
I haven't read Miss Wyoming yet, but I have read all of his other novels.
I loved Microserfs, Generation X, and Shampoo Planet, but I despised
Girlfriend in a Coma and Life After God. His Absolut Vodka ad was good,
as was his essay in the Saint Etienne album. And the MTV spots he did
awhile ago, well, they were amusing yet disconcerting. Does anyone ever
feel like they are in a Coupland moment? Here is my most Couplandest
moment to date: I was on my honeymoon last June, and my husband and I
stopped by at our friend's parents winery in Mendocino, Calif. to spend a
night. They are great, ex-hippie types, and when they were going off to
bed they offered the use of their swimming pool to us, but we said that we
didn't have any bathing suits with us, so they said we could swim naked if
we wanted. So here we were in the hot, inland California summer night,
swimming naked in water that felt to be just slightly warmer than my body
temperature. I felt like I was floating in a womb, and it felt Coupland.
I have been disappointed by his quality of writing recently, but what can
one expect... people go through changes and slumps sometimes. I think he
was overblown by the media for a while, and that changed things somehow.
I think also for Coupland to reach his deepest importance one has to have
lived in or near suburbia as a teenager. My husband just doesn't get it
because he grew up in NYC. But I know what a crumbling, dilapidated mall
feels like, for example, how the fluorescent lamps in the parking lot are
enhanced by the whoosh of the freeway on the other side of the chain link
fence. Would others agree with me on this? Or am I just babbling?
You know what else I noticed? The British bookcovers for Coupland's books
are usually much cooler-looking than the American covers. What's up with
that?
