I think the point should be that the Spice Girls DON'T make fun music.... their
writers do. I haven't got any liner notes I could check on this, but something
tells me that they don't have writing credits for their own songs. Another reason
why I don't like those gals is 'cause they don't play their own instruments and I
want to know what on earth you need 5 (or 4) singers for. One of them should be
playing a keyboard instead, and another some drums, or at the very least hooking
up a drum machine, and the two other ones some guitars. Having 5 singers seems
superfluous.
It's fine to like the music, but you gotta understand that there is a whole crew
of people behind that facade working to please the least common denominator, and
I'm not talking just a producer.

Unfortunately, there is SO MUCH out there that I have to cover my ears to keep
from bleeding to death by the sound of it. The Spice Girls are far from being
unique in their sound, as any viewing of the American Grammys or other awards
shows can prove. I can remember the New Kids on the Block, for example, and that
was a while ago.
I remember the few years before 1996 being fabulously filled with interesting
acts. I wouldn't necessarily call it a dry period. What about Britpop (with a
capital B)? That really revitalized the dry spell after the media-dubbed
Madchester or whatever washed up.
I feel that I am, however, in the majority here, so I won't waste more of
everyone's time going on and on about why the Spice Girls are not an interesting
act. I would think that a majority of us have learned by now that it is not
becoming to seek out and listen to indie bands based purely on the fact that they
are indie. I for one have learned after 7 years of watching the scene that some
indie bands are just as crappy as mainstream stuff, and that R.E.M. kicks just as
much ass, no, probably more ass, as Heavenly, Belle and Sebastian, Yo La Tengo,
and so on.
Speaking of American Beauty, when I saw that movie I was so amazed by the quality
and surprised by the fact that it was a mainstream release. Instead of me not
liking it because it wasn't indie, I found myself gaining a new respect for the
possibilities of the Hollywood machine. Furthermore, I became angered because I
thought, if they have the capabilities to make such a great thing of beauty, why
do they spend most of their time making crappy movies? It all comes back to the
least common denominator.

Aubrey Beardsley kicks ass. Or, he did kick ass. Too bad he died so young. His
style really influenced by drawing style.
By the way, when Mr. Tobin says, "tonight" at the popjourno chat, when exactly is
"tonight"? For me, tonight is still 7 hours away.
