Hey Maria has brought up an interesting thing that I never remember to think
about, how a book feels while reading it. When technology becomes so great that
we don't even need books anymore, I think they will remain just because of the
fact that they have a weight, and we will think about the feel of a book more
often.
I find I really like hardcover books with thick paper. I especially like books,
like the one I just finished, Book 3 of the Chung Kuo series, that have a lot of
divisions within the chapters, so it is easy to stop for a moment, get a glass
of water, and then come back to the book without really missing much of the
story or trying to remember where you left off. Of course the divisions
themselves don't always work, but some authors are pretty good about it.
I also agree about W magazine. Even my husband likes that magazine. I think
the large format is partly the reason. One can actually open up the magazine to
a page, and the page stays open, unlike smaller magazines, where the whole
magazine ruffles closed. Also, unlike most other magazines, each issue of W is
actually thicker than the last. It's gotten to the point where it doesn't even
fit into my P.O. Box anymore.
Now for Sylvain - They actually have tea shops in Montreal where one can smoke a
water pipe? That is the oddest thing for me, a full-blooded American, since one
can't even smoke a cigarette in any public building in California these days.
