The usual question when being seated at a restaurant in Montreal: Will
that be smoking or chain smoking?
In most of the vegetarian restaurants here, the smoking section is larger
than the non.
You might think of Montreal as stuck in a time warp: Disco still reigns
(there's a five-storey poster of John Travolta on a club up the street),
people still suntan (men in Speedos and in the parks no less), people still
smoke (see above), eat fatty foods (if the line-up at Schwartz's is any
indication), Styx can have 40,000 people show up for a concert, you can go
to swingers clubs (albeit in their homes) and you can make ethnic slurs
with seeming impunity (just ask Jacques Parizeau).
And yeah, there are a couple of places you can smoke a water pipe in the
city. Used to be you could do it right across the street from my place,
but they've found that St. Laurent types don't really go for it. Although
there are a couple of clubs where potsmoking is still de riguer.
Montreal saying: Toronto has all the money, but none of the style;
Montreal has no money and all the style.
