Is there a way to tell if anyone is still using it so I can figure out if I want to invest the time in a major update to the port, or whether it should just be removed.

Other than analyzing download stats from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/x11/x.org/contrib/applications/xmail_1.6.tar.gz there is really not much else to go on.
