I've used several window managers. Ratpoison basically does what Ion
does, but a little more extreme and without the mouse - it's light,
fast, and neat, but doesn't work at all with stuff like the GIMP[1].
There are some other lightweight window managers, but fvwm performs
reasonably well in that arena; sufficiently well that I see no need to
switch.
However, my all-time favourite `window' manager remains GNU Screen.
(Which partly explains my fondness for Ratpoison, as it's draws quite a
bit of inspiration from it.)
Then again, I'm a console junkie. X only gets started for some specific
applications - including Firefox[2].
On a side note, WTF is this thread doing on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
On yet another side note, 'light' doesn't mean all that much. Sure, it's
nice, but it can get a little extreme. Ratpoison consumes quite a bit
less memory than vim (-huge)... and a tiny fraction of the
aforementioned Firefox.

[1] The developers believe that that's the GIMP's fault. While this may
be true, this is not particularly helpful.
Of course, I hardly ever use the GIMP, so it's not as if I care.
[2] On a side note, does anyone know of a threaded text-based web
browser, i.e. something that will work at an acceptable speed when
coupled with tor and privoxy? I like w3m, but it's rather sluggish - of
course, Firefox is quite a bit worse, but it's threaded model allows me
to read a lot of stuff while the next page is loading.
