this is apparently from sdl-sound.  I can't find any reference to
timidity in sdl proper or in arts.  sdl-sound appears to be looking
for timidity.conf in /etc then /usr/local/lib/timidity.  I'm guessing
arts fails silently and the timidity error is still the last error
message in sdl's message buffer.

what size buffers and how many are you using in artsd?
