You can use them until the ports have security or other problems so bad that you need to update them. If you need newer versions it's often easier to just upgrade the base OS (which usually takes what, 10 minutes?) than try and backport things. If you install, say, a 3.5 system now, and use the correct 3.5 ports tree, you could still "make install" without problems (assuming you can get hold of the distfiles; they are mostly on ftp.openbsd.org if nowhere else).
