Works for me; I came up w/ same idea (for kde) a year ago. No strong
pref on having own category
or not; gnome and kde would make sense in X11, for example.
As they are of especial benefit to the mythical "user", it might make
sense to use the same or
at least similar names and scopes to meta-packages on other systems
(Ubuntu Linux at least
uses them).
