X is awful on my ATI 3450 - mostly pink-black-lime background. Even rendering of xterm window is buggy. I'm using generated xorg.conf without any tweaks. http://i386.linklevel.net/IMGP7560.JPG
vga1 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 "ATI Radeon 9600" rev 0x00 radeondrm0 at vga1: apic 2 int 16 drm0 at radeondrm0 On the same i386 machine with a card mentioned above and autogenerated xorg.conf I have quite pretty menu (it lags on intel video) and the game itself little slow, but playable.
