Actually i was pretty sure our python had proper support for that, since
in the past i fighted several python/gtk ports that were failing to
properly display locales when !UT8 - and iirc, i had to add
-I${LOCALBASE}/include to those CONFIGURE_ENV so that they would detect
gettext. Oh, the horrors...
