If I recall correctly the OP reported using Postfix 2.2 and- should see:

attempts to use Dovecot SASL auth with Postfix 2.2 are unlikely to get
very far.

Tried the smtp_sasl_type = dovecot.  Now get in log:

 warning: SASL: Connect to smtpd failed: No such file or directory
Mar 4 09:10:55 postfix/smtpd[21987]: fatal: no SASL authentication mechanisms

Plaintext would be ok for now,  what pop3 should I be using with 2.2?

PS:  postfix -n gives invalid option.
