I don't see out of the box fail2ban as particularly useful for spam per se. However it is useful for mitigating credential stuffing and broken stuff which stinks up logs.
Advanced fail2ban is a general system threat mitigation / shaping tool. Advanced fail2ban can require synthesizing events (likely from raw logs) which can then be monitored by fail2ban, and writing custom actions which don't necessarily have to be writing / updating firewall rules (although in practice I do write custom actions but they're mostly targeting firewall rules).
