In my experience, a clear separation of tasks is the safer choice.

So do you expect every application to handle SMTP codes, queueing etc?
Because long time ago I considered using ssmtp/MTMSP (no local queue, can return
error code) vs. nullmailer (local queue, can't return error code) for
/usr/sbin/sendmail and outsource the logic to other software.
And having apps like there are in unix philosophy - do one thing and do it
good.
...but that's just my remark at the onfd of the thread.
