It definitely sounds to me like you need to set a Threads parameter.
The default is only 128.  This was a major change from Pound 2.5 which
had a dynamic threading module.

With 2.6, you have to guess how many threads you might need, and then
Pound will always run with that many threads.  You can only tell you've
hit the limit when connections start to bog down.

I would definitely crank the Threads number way up.  We run it at 1536.
 Is that too many?  I have no way to know, and I'm not going to turn it
down and wait for something to go wrong to find out.
