Hi there, We are running out of space. We need a cleanup.
The moderators could go and repack most of the files, mercilessly crop images, make a messy slaughter of obsolete files, and upload repacked files back, but there are 3 problems with this: - The original uploader info would be lost - It's just not good poking into other people's work - We don't have the time So I've gathered a few guidelines for uploading files. These are no rules, though, just reminders. This info can be also found in the files section! I've also sorted out a few files which can be easily sized down by following these guidelines. I've put them under: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/power-pro/files/000_Review_Repack_Remove_000/ Please take a few minutes, and check if there are files there belonging to you. If it's so, please review, repack or remove them. Thanks in advance, Cüneyt File uploading guidelines: Please take a few minutes and read these guidelines, before you upload anything into the files section. - If you upload a screenshot, bar export, etc for bugreporting or feedback, upload it under the TEMP folder and delete it as soon as you don't need it anymore. Old files there will be deleted anyway. - If you have to upload multiple files, pack them into an archive. They save space and clutter. - If you can, use RAR instead of ZIP and use solid archiving with max compression. RAR can compress more and I think most PP users should already have some RAR-unpacker. - Do not upload images bigger than 50K, nor pack such images into your archives. 50K is not too little, if you take these into account: . Avoid screenshots of whole desktop. Crop the images to demonstrate your bars only. Focus on the meaningful area, frankly nobody cares for the wallpaper; there are trillions of beautiful wallpapers, but it's a group about PowerPro, remember? If you show a titlebar-placed bar, don't capture the whole application. If you show a desktop rightclick menu, don't capture the whole desktop, and so on. This achieves the biggest size gain. . Use PNG for screenshots of dialogs, text-based applications with only text, buttons, checkboxes, etc but no photographic background. JPG is not adequate for such images. GIF does a better job than JPG but is still worse than PNG. . Decrease the color depth to 256 if possible. Even the "simplest" image viewers nowadays (IrfanView, nView) are capable to do it. If there's no noticable difference btw realcolor and 256 color, take the 256 color version. This achieves 2nd biggest filesize gain. . Avoid typing your notes directly on the image as text, try to use an accompanying text file. Such images can be compressed better usually . Try *harder* to keep them small, when in doubt, think radically. - If you're uploading dll/exe files, please consider using UPX. It's a a really well-tested and stable binary-packer. It does a better job than RAR, ZIP, etc. and can be found at: http://upx.sourceforge.net/ - If your file(s) are dependent of one PowerPro-version, please state that in the description field. Try not to upload files which will be obsolete quickly. - Use the TEMP directory for temporary files. Yes, I know this is the 2nd time I'm saying this, because it's overlooked. - Try to avoid big WAV, TTF, PSD, TIF etc files. These formats are space-hogging. - Try to avoid binary formats DOC, WRI etc. TXT is good! Remember KISS! - Do not pack big files into your archives which may be interesting only for few people. Anything above 50K should be a big no-no. - Try to avoid redundant information. The same info as TXT as HLP as CHM and whatnot is unnecessary. - Use the TEMP directory! It's your friend, it rejoys everytime you upload a new file in it. Believe me! - Currently Yahoo! doesn't allow non-moderator members to create URLs under the links section. Post a message in the group with a subject like: "@ATTN moderators" and someone will create the URL for you. - Respect other's times and do not waste resources! Save the nature!
