It already exists and it works:
cl.GetIdIndex(clname, id)

I guess Evan could not find it in Help because it is in the
topic: "CL functions for working with the entire command list"

Maybe the following 3 paragraphs should be moved from
"CL functions for working with the entire command list"
to "CL functions for getting item attributes" :

cl.GetLabelIndex(clname, string)
cl.GetIdIndex(clname, string)
cl.GetItem(clname, string)

In some places you call it "string" :)
