The current opensource radeon driver may not disable the backlight on your radeon-enabled laptop, when the display goes to DPMS suspend/off. If it does or not may depend on the model/make of laptop. I can't tell. See http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3483
Using radeontool as a "triggerable" tool together with your favorite screensaver may save you quite some power. YMMV. radeontool from the commandline will tell you if backlight is on or off.
