2.6.24ish was known to be problematic for IPIs, causing lots of wakeups. What _I_ would do in this case (and you may choose to do the same) would be linux-2.6.25-rc6.tar.bz2 (or newer) cp /boot/config-... linux-2.6.25-rc6/.config make oldconfig make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image and install a hopefully nicely working 2.6.25-rc6 with a configuration that's _fully_ compatible to your current kernel thanks to oldconfig.
