Try manually accessing the couple WLAN driver file entries that powertop accesses (to figure out WLAN power management settings and stuff, /sys, /proc ...). Or, perhaps easier, simply run powertop via strace -f (or ltrace), that should hopefully stop right where the system is nuked.
