PPP3 in Canada wrote about the 5300cs he recently aquired fearing
that the 'local specialists'
aren't doing the entire fixes that Apple has been doing as
precautionary insurance, and charging the unsuspecting for 'warrantee
work' as well.
Has anyone on the list had their powerbook repaired in Canada under
the programme and where did you send it?
I'll even ship it to a friend in the US who will act
as the owner to have Apple do the work themselves and then have it
shipped back.
I have similar concerns about these powerbook models in Japan.
Although my 5300 has a serial number below XX622xxxxxx stated in the US
Apple TIL, when I brought it to the repair shop in Tokyo authorized by Apple
Japan, they said my number didn't qualify for the free repair. But they
could replace my splittng screen/hinge problem for 25000 yen(around $200)
Ok I thought, I'll see if i can get the repair done in the US. My friend
called the US1-800-SOS-APPL number. The person she spoke to said the 5300s I
bought, numbers
SG 539 2QG 6TX & SG 541 5H4 6TX came up as Japanese models.
This person told her different regions had different quality issues and the
resolutions for different areas are different so he would call a dispatch
group to see if mine could go through the US program.
The answer we got was that units sold overseas cannot be repaired in the US
but must be repaired in the country of sale.
My friend's 5300 was bought in the US, but it was repaired 3 times in Tokyo.
The motherboard was replaced twice. It had 2 ink stamps inside her battery
bay and an AA sticker also. Currently her trackpad clicker is broken.
She was told her clicker trouble is no longer covered under REA since her
book had already been through repairs and had everthing replaced. Apple US
quoted her US$310 +$20 plus shipping to fix it.
I am going to try calling Apple Customer Service again in Tokyo again armed
with more info. Neither of my 5300s have an AA stamp and one has an obviously
splitting screen problem.
Good luck with your repairs,
Zita
