Hi--
I have a PB1400, and researched the video issue--
Unfortunately the 1400 lacks the ability for "Zoomed Video". Zoomed
Video is an "extension" to the PC Card standard which allows a PC
Card to get direct access to the internal screen, for such things as
displaying the output of video cameras and TV tuners. In Apple's
words:
"[Z]oom video [is] a method of displaying video information
sent from a PC Card. The video information can be displayed in a
window on the internal display or on an external video monitor.
Because the zoom video feature sends video information from a PC Card
directly to the video controller, it provides full-motion video at
the same time the computer is performing other tasks.The zoom video
signals from the lower PC Card slot are accompanied by stereo audio
signals in PCM (pulse-code modulated) format. The zoom video
connection makes it possible for PC Cards to provide a variety of
video services such as:
* MPEG video decompression hardware
* a TV tuner
* connecting a camera for video teleconferencing"
Apple only implemented Zoomed Video on the more recent
PowerBooks (everything from the 3400 on). You could still get video
into your PowerBook 1400 using a few PC-Card capture devices (Newer
made a pc-card that just has the connectors; you'll need to supply
the source of the signal via a VCR or something else with a tuner and
iRez makes a video camera). Perhaps you may use the SCSI port, I
think Iomega had a "Buzz" box that externally converts video, but I
don't know if it is compatible with our PB1400s. Basically you need
to attach an external device that can digitize the video, and then
interface with your video source.
So I use my wife's desktop for video.
Good Luck!
