I must recommend the cheapest Handspring Visor (www.handspring.com) ...
it comes with either a USB or serial connector (or no connector; see
below), and Mac and Windows software, with which you can install
downloaded Palm OS programs, and which duplicates the Visor on my PB
5300cs
I got a modem which fits in the Visor's versatile expansion slot (don't
know if the Palm has the slot) and adds 8 megs of memory (the cheap Visor
comes with two, plenty, BTW, for most programs, the extra space for me is
where I store some of the books I'm currently reading). The Visor won't
use a regular modem; don't know about the Palm
I use the modem to call up my desktop and sync with it, and so don't need
the connector. Have a look at the Visor; though with a modem it can
approach $300. OTOH there are a few modem choices; mine with the 8 megs
was more expensive than the one that Visor makes, without extra memory
Eudora makes a free suite of Palm OS internet programs (email and text
browser). The Visor would still be usable without the browser; you would
then use the $20 serial cord to sync. There is software that will
download several "lite" sites from your Mac in the morning (Low End Mac
is one offered in the "Avant Go" format) and transfer them to your Palm
or Visor so you can surf them during the day _without_ a modem ... in
that case the cheapest Visor is about $150
