This is just a theory:

After the game loads into RAM, the PowerBook's power saving features come
on and don't see the game as real system activity.  (This happened with
some screen saver games that I liked.)

Make sure all your PowerBook settings are set for maximum performance
(minimum battery conservation). Especially look in the PowerBook control
panel and make sure that processor cycling is not allowed and that
processor speed reduction is not allowed.
