I think I got it.

This PowerBook, although it has the 540c screen, must have a 520 motherboard, 
which has a 25 MHz bus.

That would give us:

25       *  3.5  =  87.500

I have not opened the little beast yet, but will do so tomorrow. Then I'll 
check if it is a 520.

The 520, 520c, 540 and 540c motherboards are identical.

The processor board, which is replaced when the PPC upgrade is installed, has 
the processor's master oscillator.

But your theory sounds good, otherwise.
