Ahh the REA program. I picked up another 190cs for a good price, I
called Apple and they think it has been manufactured after one of the
rea dates, so the problem should not exisit, the sticker on the back
is hard to read due to wear, there are 2 stamps in the battery bay
one looks like date of manufacture other looks like REA stamp to me,
so appears to as if it has been through REA at least once.
However the screen is definitely toast as it does not
display properly at all only blue, you push on the sides all sorts of
colors come up and smoke of an acid type smell came out. It has a
video out card and I hooked up to a monitor that works fine, so poor
screen plastics seem the culprit, they are separating especially on
the left. I called apple and they said if it has already been
through the program they will do nothing to fix it except call me and
say it will cost $400.00. They sent me the shipping container for
free so they can scan the tag on the back to be sure of the date.
So my question have others got their machines through the
program more then the 2 times, Apple says that is the max, but if the
problem is really the poor manufactured plastics which are
separating, I think they should go ahead and fix it again. I have
read others have sent it 3,4, 5 times to get it right. Is this
possible
I had another PB 190 I sent in and I had to reseat the
memory after they sent it back as it would not see all the installed
ram, no big deal but sloppy work.
I feel if this is such a problem that they had to set up a
recall, err REA, program then they should stand behind the poor
design. To me this puts a lot of weight on what will happen in my
buying plans, if they fix it I will buy new and go X, if I get stuck,
I will buy used and proven tech. To me the new OS X, and the machines
that have to handle this transition this REA program says a lot about
how a company will back up any problemsthat might be in OS X
transition generation. Any tips on how to get Apple to fix this thing
or is it really 2 strikes and your out.
Thanks all
Geoff
