If you have a larger hard drive, I'd say 8.1 no question...it's what I have on
mine and I'm quite pleased with it.
As far as browser, I've got iCab and Netscape 4.08 on mine, and iCab is
faster, though it crashes more often. (That might be a consequence of not
boosting it's ram allocation more; that is a very stabilizing trick from
Netscape) Netscape runs more slowly, but more reliably.
As far as mail goes, I can't say. I use a wonderful, fast, easy-to-use mail
text-only client called MailDrop, but it's for IMAP mail services only, not
POP, which most people have.
For a POP mailer, I can't recommend, because I've never used a pop mail
account...only hosted mail (like telnet to the UNIX or VMS host to read my
mail) or IMAP.
