In answer to Pat's question: With your 36MB of RAM, OS 8.1 will run very
well and leave you plenty to run apps, especially if you judiciously prune
out the crud you don't need. '040 chips run 8.1 in a very stable fashion
while providing the slick niceties of its generation. Still, I also agree
with the list writer who recommended OS 7.6.1, a great OS that was soon
overshadowed by the long awaited OS 8.
As for the browser: For text work in non-Java pages, I still use Navigator
2.0.2. in all my Macs, including my 030 PB's. It has also worked well in
'040 PB's for which I've built disk. The soon to be released, developed
version of iCab would perhaps be an advisable replacement for the venerable
2.0.2.
Here in Japan the offshore bandwidth is a problem. Often, the packets just
don't come in often enough from the servers. Thus the speed difference with
the Nav 4.X versions is very noticabley slower on 040 machines. More
capabability, but you pay for it on older machines in some cases - milage
may vary as they say. I know this by way of comparison from using a 603e PB
at the same workstation as the other, older Macs.
As for the e-mail client: I recommend Eudora Light which is free. Its
elegant, stable and simple and it launches very quickly. A plus for me is
that it accepts the SpellTools application very nicely. Although I have
later versions packed away, I still use 3.X.
Your 540 should do all the bread and butter stuff the rest of usually do
every day in fine style. - Lorne
