The original Portable StyleWriter was indeed a repackaged Canon printer,
like all StyleWriter printers except the last two models (which were
HPs). I dunno why, but in the case of this one model, unlike all the
other Canon-mfgd StyleWriters, Apple decided not to install a standard
Mac serial port (and associated electronics) in the printer, but left it
with the parallel port its PC equivalent had, and sold it with a
parallel-to-serial cable and software they OEM'd from GDT Softworks, the
same package the latter sold under the name PowerPrint, for using PC
printers with Macs. (I have one of these packages if you're interested,
also the Portable StyleWriter driver software.)

It wasn't much of a printer, the portable equivalent of the rather slow
original desktop StyleWriter model. The Portable StyleWriter basic unit
must be hand-fed sheet by sheet, though a sheet feeder attachment was
available for it. It used the same AC adapter as the original
StyleWriter (I have several, platinum version) and the same Canon
BC-01/02 cartridges as the StyleWriter 1/II/1200/1500 models.
