Thanks Chuck,  you suggested re the HD with the blinking ? floppy.

<<Sounds to me like you do not have the SCSI ID set to 0 (first device). And

it also sounds like you have the external set to the start up or the floppy

set

as STARTUP DISK in control Panel. That is where I would start looking into

this anyways... ;o)>>


I double checked, the internal 500 mb hard disk is designated start up disk 
in the control panel.    

The system profiler lists the 500mb drive as '0".

 But still get the blinking  ? floppy when I start up without the external 
drive attached.

The OS icon is on the system folder and it appears in the upper position on 
the desktop when the external scsi drive is attached. The external drive has 
Japaese OS 8.0 on it.  The internal has English OS 8.1, if that makes any 
difference.

It's a puzzle.  Could it have something to do with termination? 

Would appreciate other suggestions? Thanks.
