Before I bag the 540C (new PRAM battery, two 85% nimh batteries,
500Mb hard drive, car charger and 36Mb RAM) and try and find a
different model portable, I'm thinking about pulling off all the keys
one by one and cleaning the action(s) to see if that helps.
Is that a common thing to need to do? Is it difficult? I seems kind
of time consuming but I suspect that I would only need to do it once.
Any suggestions on how to clean the actions would be appreciated.

Actually if you are looking to match the 180, you won't succeed. That said,
I liked the keyboard on the 5300c that I owned, and while Apple claims it is
the same keyboard from the 540c with a different mounting, I found mine a
lot nicer to type on. Perhaps the chasis of the computer or the mounting
scheme makes it feel better, I'm not sure, but I found it while soft like
the 540c, to have much better feedback, and correspondingly fewer typos.
I also liked the keyboard on the 2400c despite its smaller size.
