william--
if i were encountering this, i would drop back to the last known good
componenets and eliminate what i could of the questions.
you say you swapped out the HD for a bigger one and now the machine
says it's not a mac HD. that's pretty clear, but since you're baffled
with the new floppy drive (? am I understanding you right? you did say
the machine doesn't like the new floppy drive)
i would drop back to the previous known working hard drive, and then re
test your new floppy drive and cable with it in the machine.

my suspicions are, that you have unwittingly replaced the old HD
formatted for mac, with a new bigger one formatted for a PC. just
because they might have the same pin connectors doesn't mean they are
formatted for the same kind of machine.

same for floppy drive, tho the pin connectors are more likely to be
obviously consistent with the machine they are meant go with.
i think you are going to find that your new floppy drive works fine
with the old HD. i think the new HD is PC formatted and if you want to
save anything that's on it, you're going to have to move that data off
the HD and save it using PC technology before you reformat your bigger
HD and bring it into Mac service.

but what do i know? i'm new.
but that what it sounded like, by what you said you did.
