Well, here's one for you. SCSI Disk Mode has always worked fine
between my PB1400 and my Power Computing PowerTower Pro. Until now.
I swapped out the original 1.3GB hard drive -- with MacOS 8.6 and all
my files -- for a new 4GB drive that came preformatted with 9.1. (The
PTP is running 8.6, BTW.) I've got my backup all set to restore to
the new drive, I set up SCSI disk mode with the new drive in place, I
follow the same routine I always have before with turning on other
devices in the chain, I fire up the PowerBook, I get the familiar
SCSI icon with the proper SCSI I.D. I set as soon as I fire up the
PTP, and then...nothing. When the desktop appears the PB drive isn't
there. ???
SCSI Probe sees the PBook drive as a valid SCSI device, but any
attempt to mount it produces these errors:
Trying Device 1.3.0:
FAILED: Not a Macintosh volume
Trying Device 1.3.1:
FAILED: SCSI error: -7932 (1) Sense: 240 (37)
Drive Setup shows it as an unmounted drive, but only offers
initialization options, no mounting options.
I even checked to see if perhaps this was somehow a PC drive with
MacOS installed on it, but File Exchange doesn't recognize it as such
either.
This new drive is HFS+, as the old drive was, but aside from the
difference in size, the only other difference between the two is that
the original was 8.6 and the new one is 9.1. (And, yes, I've checked
and re-checked to make sure password security isn't getting in the
way either.)
I know if you're using an HFS+ disk for SCSi Dick Mode you must be
connecting to a drive running at least 8.1 -- in this case I'm
running 8.6, so that's not an issue -- but surely you don't have to
be running at least the same VERSION of the OS on both machines, do
you?
Stumped,
Bill
