I did a clean install of 8.1 onto the new-to-me powerbook 1400 a couple
weeks ago; after I installed Norton Utils 5, Office98, and maybe Netscape
4.79, something got very corrupt somewhere- I could not boot with
extensions enabled, without having the PB lock up after about 30 seconds to
1 min after bootup. Sometimes the finder would not load all the way-
desktop backdrop would load, desktop icons would not.

Hmm.. OK rebuilt desktop as seemed logical, didn't help.

A force quit of Finder, then desktop would load, but lockup after 1 min or
so still. Boot with extensions disabled everything seemed to run fine.

So I turned off all the extraneous crap Norton and Netscape and Office had
installed (Office Manager, disk light, file saver, AOL instant messenger,
etc. etc.) but still issues. I had to trash many prefs (I just went to
system/preferences folder and trashed finder prefs, general prefs, etc.
etc. and all is now well.

Maybe try something similar with your setup... In your case, I'd start by
trashing the startup disk prefs :)
