In the control panels there is a place to say how many "recent documents" you want to save. You are not really saving those documents, you are merely putting aliases of their locations there. In system 9 it is a control panel called Apple Menu Items. That is where you tell the system how many recent documents, applications, and/or servers you want to save information about.
