Generally speaking... a couple years. But that is quite general. A lot of things effect overall battery life. Most importantly is the more often the battery is used, the longer it will last. Consistent drainings and rechargings are important to sustaining the life of your battery.
If someone buys a brand new battery, installs it, then runs off of AC power all the time and never uses it, it could be significantly impaired in 6 months time... Although, you could revive it if you caught it in time. On the other hand, if you use it frequently, it could last you longer... I have a notebook with a NiMh battery in it. I bought it new in 1997 and I still consistently get 2 hours off of a full charge. When it was new, I was getting 2 hours and 10 minutes... And thats after 4 years! But, I religiously fully discharge and recharge that battery at least once a week....
