Bruce, I don't have a lot of experience with either OS8.6 nor the Performa 6214. However, I have noticed over the years that starting up file sharing seems to take longer and longer as time goes on, but if I reformat and restore all the files, file sharing seems to start up much more quickly. That seems to eliminate the number of files as the only or main culprit, and suggests that the volume directories may get "gunked up" over the course of time since the main effect of a reformat/restore is to rebuild the directories. I have noticed also that rebuilding the desktop seems to have no effect on this. Well, alright, I don't have any stop watch times or other hard data, but that's my theory and I'm sticking with it.
