I do not know  specifically about the 5300, however I used to do
notebook repairs (PC mostly) and in this situation it was usually the
inverter that supplies the HV to the tube (caution 3-400V!)often it
was no more than the supply fuse on the inverter board, other times it
was the driver transistor or even the transformer (shorted turns).
As you will have to take the screen apart anyway, you can check the
backlight tube, if it is not physically broken then look for other
faults. (as long as it is intact it will light up if the inverter is
functioning, but maybe not to full brightness if it is old.)

NB another thought, check the switch that indicates the screen is
closed, on a lot of notebooks that turns off the inverter, if it is
stuck or broken that may be your problem.
