I still have both MS Word 5.1a and WordPerfect 3.5e for my older macs.

Take notice that Word 5.1a is pre-PowerPC so it's ideal for those 68K
Macs that have limited RAM expandability. On '040 systems it's fast and
very capable.

WordPerfect was my favorite word processor (and still is) for System
7.5.1 to 7.6.1 on PowerPC's. The last version, "e", which was made
compatible with OS 8.x is still a complete word processor that was years
ahead of Word 98, and it used a lot less RAM.

I still have the original packages of Microsoft Word 5.1a and Novell
(yes!) WordPerfect 3.5, as well as the WordPerfect 3.5e update from
Corel.

My only gripe with the last WP update was that you had to force quit the
installer to get out of it in Mac OS 8.x. It wouldn't let you enter the
serial number, but the app worked fine after installation.

For the original poster asking about the best word processor for a PB
170, I'd recommend Word 5.1a. You'll be compatible with all the
subsequent versions of Word.
