Hi Vicki (and James): Vicki asked for advice about a W/P for working on a PUB 170 that launches quickly.
I've followed this thread with some interest for two reasons: (1) Because my W/P needs have often been exactly in Vicki's category, that is using an older PUB on my lap in bed and requiring a leaner app. (2) Because I have made a point to collect solutions for the small footprint W/P. So far I think you have had some good advice. And Gary Adams has pointed to WriteNow 3.0. Well, I've used many of the apps that have been referred to, but the app that gets put on every hard drive I ever use is WriteNow. This is no longer being developed or sold, but a persistent search may yield something. On your machine in should launch in approximately 7 seconds. I just timed it on my G-3 Mac, and it took about 3.5 seconds to launch the window ready for action. In my opinion, WN is one of the most elegant applications ever to be devised for the Mac. WN 3 originally arrived complete on 2 floppies. The ultimate version was V. 4.02. It contains a good dictionary and a thesaurus. It will facilitate tables and sports the best print preview window I've ever used. The on-board manual is a joy to use. It will run on 500 -700 k and can be configured to run mostly in RAM. It has special features applicable to PowerBooks. Several options are available for saving text including RTF. It's not perfect; for example, there is no-auto saving, so you will want to get in the habit of doing COMMAND -SAVE from time to time. WN's hyphenation facility has always been a sticking point with me. My trick for any extensive and involved writing is to hammer out drafts using Write Now, and later transfer them to Word X, or whatever. WN is one solution for the requirement which lies inbetween Simple Text together with its cousins, and the heavies which are used in publishing. Brutally efficient and fast, with lots of neat features. If you have more interest, get back to me off list. - best regards, Lorne Lorne Spry in Sendai (Honshu) JAPAN -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
