Well I must have gotten the cheapo version of 8.1 because I didn't get
the 'Wham!' sound FX, but this is the exact error I got when I
accidentally got the PowerPC version of 8.1 installed...(by running the
8.1 updater from a PPC machine while the 540 was connected in SCSI disk
mode)

What happens if you boot from your external drive? (Holding
cmd-option-shift-delete will bypass your startup drive)

I'll bet you accidentally chose system for PowerPC instead of 'This
Computer' or your computer thinks its a PPC system.

IAC, Booted from the external drive, you can re-install 8.0, specifying
a 68K system or 'any macintosh'. Then copy the 8.1 updater to the PB
hard drive, boot from it, and re-run the 8.1 updater.
