Well I must have gotten the cheapo version of 8.1 because I didn't get the 'Wham!' sound FX, but this is the exact error I got when I accidentally got the PowerPC version of 8.1 installed...(by running the 8.1 updater from a PPC machine while the 540 was connected in SCSI disk mode) What happens if you boot from your external drive? (Holding cmd-option-shift-delete will bypass your startup drive) I'll bet you accidentally chose system for PowerPC instead of 'This Computer' or your computer thinks its a PPC system. IAC, Booted from the external drive, you can re-install 8.0, specifying a 68K system or 'any macintosh'.
