You shouldn't need to do that. Mine worked right away. Does your cable
provider need to know the hardware address of the adapter? (sometimes,
confusingly, they call it the MAC address.

It would be a string of 6 2-digit hex codes like 00:23:ab:42:77:d5, and
is a number that uniquely identifies every ethernet adapter. If you
previously had another computer connected to the service, they may have
restricted service to that hardware address only, in which case you'll
need to tell them you changed your computer, and (usually) either tell
them the new HW address (which you can get from Apple System Profile or
via Get Info from the TCP/IP control panel..if tcp/ip is running) or
reset the cable modem.

You did install the Focus drivers? You need to do that before the
ethernet will work...

Another thing to check...occasionally, the little pins in the rj45
ethernet jack part of the dongle get messed up (most often when someone
crams a phone line in there instead of an ethernet cable) take a close
look at the dongle, if any of the little pins in there are out of place
it's possible to *gently* nudge them back into place...
