If you have gotten this far and you cannot connect then perhaps you need to
tell the cable company the Ethernet address (MAC) of your computer for them
to "see" you. I had to do that to get MediaOne (now Comcast) to get my
service running. I don't know where you find it in previous systems, but in
system 9 it is in the Apple System Profiler. It is in Network Overview:
AppleTalk: Hardware address . After I got connected I then had a problem
sending mail , but not receiving mail. that problem was because my mail
server was actually at the college. I wanted to keep using that account and
not use the cable company for my email. However, I had to set my smtp server
to be the one at the cable company to be able to send mail at all.

If you have a router between your PowerBook and the cable modem then it is a
different problem. You need the MAC address of the router for the cable
company to see you. Sometimes they have to ping your modem or refresh it or
something. Sometimes you need to turn the cable modem off and on or the
router off and on (if you have one) to refresh it.
