The inverter board is used to supply the high voltage needed to power
the CCFL which is a florescent light tube. If your shimmer seems that it
could be caused by a flickering florescent light, then your problem may
be the inverter or it may be the CCFL itself.

If you think the shimmer is NOT the light source, then the next thing to
consider is the video cable going from the bottom half of the computer
to the display. Since it is much easier to check the cable plug/socket
on the bottom part, do that first. 

You might try dimming the screen brightness completely then with an
external light, try to see if the shimmer is still present. That may
give you a clue as to the source of the problem.
